Overview of the Counseling Psychology MA Program

Requirements for Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology

The M.A. Program in Counseling Psychology is focused on Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy (MFT), while also incorporating an East-West and service perspective on therapeutic counseling and psychological transformation. Supervised counseling experience at the practicum level provides opportunities to apply theory into practice. Prospective students whose undergraduate major is not in psychology or a related field and who have not taken introductory courses in psychology and social science may need to fulfill additional prerequisites.

    Tuition: $100 per unit

(Successful completion of the two hypnotherapy courses permits one to apply for certification as a hypnotherapist through the American Board of Hypnotherapy, if interested in developing this adjunct to counseling.)

    A Proctored Comprehensive Written Examination, graded on a Pass/Not Pass basis, is required for online students at the end of their program of study.

The focus of the course is on the practice of Selfless Service. The two required texts and other readings will provide a theoretical background indicating how selfless service can and should be performed, its therapeutic temporal and spiritual aspects, and the need to engage it in a transpersonal way. An Introductory course on psychological testing, including familiarization with several actual tests.  Includes some history of psychological assessment and testing. This course will focus on the “how’s” of the Clinical Interview, exploring the Clinical Interview and its components from the perspective of the microskills approach developed over many years by Allen E. Ivey and colleagues.  You will have the opportunity to integrate parts of this approach with your counseling style, if you choose.  You will have the opportunity to reexamine your counseling style, which is always valuable, and to enhance your way of communicating with clients, perfecting the techniques that work, and acquiring new ones.

This course will focus on that what, how's and why's of Clinical Supervision.  What is Clinical Supervision.  How to choose an internship. How to use your supervision wisely and much, much more.  You will also explore the various aspects of the counseling profession and consider if this is the path you wish to choose.

This is a three-part, year-long course that includes, Psychology 374A, 374B and 374C.  Each component (A, B, and C) requires 75 hours per quarter of supervised practicum in a counseling agency, and significant writing and reflecting on your experiences. You will be required to keep track of these practicum hours on a special form; which is available through the University by e-mail.

Since some of you will be taking this class in a state other than California, you will need to be aware of the requirements for supervision and supervisors as is mandated by your state board. You must be sure that the individual supervising your practicum and signing off your hours has that authority so that your hours will be valid. This course will focus on how understanding family maltreatment is vital in being competent at dealing with some of the most important real life concerns.  We will study the multifaceted arena of abuse within the family.  Topic to be presented are child abuse: physical sexual, and emotional maltreatment; sexual offenders, domestic violence and elder abuse.  Each topic will be covered from an ecological or systemic perspective.  This means that as you study the components of abuse within the family; you will consider the intricate sums of each part: social, cultural, group and individual, their impacts and effects.
