The premise and focus of Consciousness Psychology - also referred to as Transpersonal Consciousness Psychology and Integral Consciousness Psychology - is an open ended exploration of the way that consciousness creates, pervades, preserves, and transforms all existence. Many mystical wisdom traditions hold that omni-consciousness is the divine substrate that underlies and informs everything, including our own consciousness.  This is central to World University's operative philosophy, which has been called Monistic Idealism.  We will explore both the personal and transpersonal dimensions of this psychology.

In this course, we will learn about Yoga, which is defined as “restraint of fluctuations in the consciousness, which has three functions: cognition, conation or volition, and motion” (Iyengar, 1993, p. 46). Yoga is both an art and a science in discipline of the mind and body; therefore, the mind becomes more matured and cultured. This course will introduce Patanjali's jewel-like style of these ancient but vital teachings to those who seek the path of self-knowledge. In this course, you will learn what Yoga is, how it works, and how to purify the mind and let it settle into absolute stillness.

An in-depth analysis of self-esteem; its implications and applications from the micro to the macro level, focusing on psychologist Nathaniel Branden's now-classic text, The Psychology of Self-Esteem. Branden argues that self-esteem is not simply a feel-good phenomenon--rather, it rests on the appropriate exercise of mind and is intimately related to rationality, perseverance, self-responsibility, and personal integrity. Further, he maintains that although others may help or obstruct its development, it must be generated from within.

Texts for course:

From Mentor's Introduction:
This course is an introduction to the practice of counseling. It will assist those of you in vocations where you are called upon to help people solve their problems. It will prepare those of you planning a career in psychotherapy to pursue further study.

This course only lightly touches on theory. Of course, theory is implied in many of the techniques. In depth study of theory is covered in other courses.

I have selected two widely acclaimed authors, each with a broad command of technique, and each with a unique approach.

David Martin lyrically, explores the counselor’s vocation, focusing on development of the counselor’s intuition, empathy and compassion, and showing how these qualities, when brought to bear on specific techniques, create a successful counseling experience.

The second book is Lauren Slater’s memoir of a time period early in her career as a therapist.  It is a refreshing page-turner providing the reader with an idea of what it is like to be a psychotherapist. I have assigned it in the fourth week of the course, for a nice change of pace.

Required Texts:   Please order your texts early enough so that you have them on hand at the beginning of the school Quarter.

Texts for course:

From Mentor's Introduction:   Whether you are a veteran self counselor or new to the practice, this course is intended do two things: suggest a theoretical structure to make your self counseling work more enjoyable and fruitful; and take you on an inner adventure of your own life. There are hundreds of disciplines in the area of self counseling, and discovering the ones for you is part of your journey.

In this course we will use three texts.   The first is John Bradshaw’s classic text HOMECOMING, which outlines the developmental stages which trauma can interrupt and the behavioral hallmarks of early psychological injuries. It also gives maps that show the way to healing.  Bradshaw draws on the wisdom of dozens of great writers whose works you may choose to pursue.

The second text for this course is Etty Hillesum's AN INTERRUPTED LIFE, a masterpiece narrative of the adventures of actually walking the inner path that the great writers theoretically describe.
